The Ocean Explorer Program was designed to enhance the underwater experience of divers and snorkelers by helping them better understand and explore coral reef ecosystems.
The program consists of three marine ecology modules, each designed to provide insight into a particular facet of the marine environment and delivered through pre and post briefings.
MODULE 1:
THE BENTHOS
Bottom-dwelling species are incredibly important to the health and productivity of the coral reef ecosystem. This module helps divers and snorkelers hone their observational skills and understand the subtle yet vital indicators of coral reef health.
MODULE 2:
REEF FISHES
This experience familiarizes divers and snorkelers with coral reef fishes, but it involves much more than “fish ID.” This module introduces divers and snorkelers to the concept of how fish morphology drives their behavior and role in the coral reef ecosystem.
MODULE 3:
THE REEF AT NIGHT
The coral reef at night is a fascinating and mysterious world. This module raises awareness of the unique behaviors and phenomena that divers and snorkelers can observe as the coral reef community transitions from day to night, including bioflorescence.
The three modules complement each other and can be completed separately or together, in any order.
